If the developing countries want to reap maximum benefits from the World Trade Organisation (WTO) agreements, the internal reforms have to be taken care of that should match the requirement. This observation emerged out of a panel discussion in a workshop organised by CUTS – CRC at Kolkata on March 6, 2006. Around 50 representatives from different media houses attended the workshop.

While Milind Murugkar from Loksatta, Maharshtra highlighted Agreement on Agriculture (AoA) under WTO referring to the debate on subsidies and tariffs, Prof Soumen Sikdar of Calcutta University stressed the necessity for internal reforms to reap the benefits from trade liberalisation. Santanu Sanyal from The Hindu Business Line put forward the role of media in dissemination of information to the common mass. Kanai Mitra from Sabuj Sona also expressed the same view. Jayanta Basu from The Telegraph, Kolkata moderated the discussion.
