There is a need to review digital policies and the new framework should be designed afresh keeping in consideration their cross-sectoral impact and new realities, lawmaker Rajeev Chandrasekhar Friday said.

Speaking at the Webinar organised by CUTS International, Chandrasekhar, who is also a member of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Personal Data Protection Bill, 2019 (PDPB), said that the benefits of data localisation may be outweighed by the costs involved in data localisation.

The Parliamentarian argued that data localisation is a narrow response to achieve government objectives, and pointed out a lack of holistic clarity or sectoral understanding,

Amar Patnaik, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) called for incentivising local storage of data by creating a stimulative environment for the data centre industry and highlighted the current pain points including multiple licenses to establish and operate a data centre.
